From bones to brains, our cutting-edge hospital heals even the most serious of injuries, specializing in everything from total joint replacement to spinal cord injuries and neurological conditions.  As the state’s largest provider of acute care, inpatient rehabilitation and orthopedic specialty care, we offer some of the most advanced therapies for stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, orthopaedic and sports injury, among many others.

We are seeking an extraordinary Therapeutic Recreation Therapist to join our team at UM Rehab & Ortho Institute.

  • Under general supervision, assesses patients’ function leisure status, and develops a comprehensive therapeutic recreation treatment plan according to practice standards.
  • Designs and implements therapeutic recreation treatment services, monitors and documents patient care and progress for a given caseload.
  • Works collaboratively with other health care professionals regarding the impact of socio-leisure factors on patients’ functioning.

In total, we welcome over 3,000 patients every year and offer more than 130 beds on specialized units dedicated to stroke, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, limb loss, and comprehensive medical rehabilitation.

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • 1 year of relevant experience preferred.
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
  • Current ACLS or BCLS certification
  • A minimum of three years full-time experience as a certified recreational therapist (required).
  • A minimum of three years full-time experience as a certified recreational therapist (required).
  • Proficient advanced knowledge of TR theory and practice techniques.
  • General knowledge of orthopedics, pediatrics, neurology, psychology, psychiatry, anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, general medicine, and the TR treatment implications of each.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills and excellent communication skills are required to work with patients, therapists, medical, administrative, and nursing staff successfully and to document patient progress, quality assurance activities, and other required information.
