Course: 5-6-7-8: Considerations in the Evaluation and Treatment of Performing Artists
Objectives:
1.To appreciate unique requirements for different performers
2.To discuss intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence performer’s injuries
3.To become aware of common dance and instrumental musician injuries
4.To consider special factors in the assessment and rehabilitation of dancers and instrumental musicians.
Leigh A. Roberts, PT, DPT, OCS is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, and a Polestar Certified Rehabilitation Pilates Practitioner. Dr. Roberts received her Master of Physical Therapy in 1999 and her Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2005, both from Shenandoah University. She has been Board Certified as an Orthopeadic Clinical Specialist since 2003. Dr. Roberts has been a member of the APTA since 1996, and has served on the board of the Performing Arts Special Interest Group as Treasurer and President. She has been a member of the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science since 2002 having presented at multiple conferences. From 2016 – 2023, she held a position as adjunct faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science.
Dr. Roberts has worked with professional dancers including The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The Washington Ballet Company, The Ballet Theater of Maryland, Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, The Kirov Academy of Ballet in DC, Baltimore School for the Arts, and various touring Broadway shows. Currently, Dr. Roberts works at Johns Hopkins Rehabilitation Network as part of their Performing Arts Specialty Service Line, including treating performers at the Performing Arts Clinic at the Peabody Institute. Dr. Roberts enjoys family, fitness and living a healthy lifestyle while tackling the adventure of raising three children with her husband of 25 years.
