Volunteer with the Special Olympics

We invite you to volunteer at this year’s Summer Games Health Athletes Screening Event – FUNfitness- physical therapy!

 During these screenings physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and physical therapist or physical therapist assistant students work with athletes and coaches to improve optimal function in sports training and competition, prevention of or reduced risk for injury and recommending exercises and other helpful strategies. >>Learn more

Experience Inclusion with Special Olympics Maryland

Getting involved in our FUNFitness Screening could be a great opportunity for you to get hands on experience and knowledge working with individuals with intellectual disabilities. FUNfitness provides athletes the opportunity to be screened for flexibility of hamstring, calf, shoulder rotator and hip flexor muscles; functional strength of the abdominal and lower extremity muscles; and balance. 

The special test that may be performed throughout the screening include:

  • Flexibility
    • Modified Thomas Test
    • Passive Knee Extension
    • Ankle Dorsiflexion
    • Modified Apley’s Test
  • Functional Strength
    • Timed Sit to Stand
    • Hand Grip Dynamometry
    • Seated Push-up Test
  • Balance
    • Tandem Stance
    • Single Leg Stance (Eyes Open and Closed)
    • Timed up and go
    • Seated Forward Functional Reach
    • Seated Lateral Functional Reach
  • Aerobic
    • 2 minute step in place
    • 5 minute wheel test
